Day 8 - Hilton Head

Sunday morning before we left for Hilton Head, despite June saying we will just have cereal, Eric and Myra fixed us a nice pancake breakfast. I was happy.

After breakfast we said our goodbyes and  set off for Hilton Head. Eric and Myra are always welcoming and we enjoy seeing them when we pass through.

The drive to HH was easy, we only stopped for fuel because we were still full from breakfast, so we just had snacks for lunch.

I pushed it a bit to get to HH because we wanted to get there in time to do some biking. We arrived around 2:45PM, met up with our friends Rich and Sandi and were on our bikes by 3PM. We agreed we would do a 'short' ride around the island before dinner.

It was a fun ride with many scenic areas. One thing you immediately notice is in HH everything is hidden, gas stations are surrounded by trees, houses are all muted colors so they blend in, even the Walmart can not be seen until you are on top of it. This makes for pleasant views almost everywhere on the island. The bike paths are everywhere.

The paths go by many ponds and they do have Alligators...no swimming. This guy was on someone's lawn.

We stopped at a few scenic places including the light house view.

We rode for about 10 miles on the bike paths around the area, and then popped out onto the beach. It had to be close to low tide because there were vast areas of nice hard sand to ride on.

We rode the beach for about 5 miles back to Rich and Sandi's rental. In the end our 'short' ride was 15.7 miles, I tried to stay far enough in front of June so I could not hear the whining.

We even saw a few dolphins while biking down the beach.

Rich had his phone tracker on during the ride, we covered a good portion of the Sea Pines area of HH but HH has over 60 miles of bike trails, we left plenty for next time.

We got back from our ride just in time to shower and get off to our 6PM dinner appointment. We arrived for dinner right on time at the Crazy Crab at Jarvis Creek. We had a good meal and it was fun to catch up with some of my IBMer colleagues.

Monday we will make our way to Fort Clinch State Park in Florida.

  1. Hilton Head is pretty busy but it was still easy to get around on bikes. I really like seeing the dolphins up close(r). Dinner was also delicious, leftovers again. Life is good.
