Saturday there was a chili cook-off in Luckenbach, the 11th Annual Mud Dauber Festival & Chili Cook-Off. Randy and his Kissing Tree friends had organized an outing, some had been to Luckenbach and some had not. If you have never heard the Waylon Jennings song, you really need to listen to it to appreciate the kind of atmosphere the place evokes.
Waylon Jennings Luckenbach Texas
Luckenbach is a bit over an hour from San Marcos and we caravanned our way there. The weather was an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10, it simply could not be better.
Luckenbach has a population of 3 but does have a post office.
When you arrive you can buy a chili tasting kit for $5, and you can taste as many of the over 50 contestant's chili as you can hold. I think I sampled about half of them. In between each tasting you cleanse your pallet with beer, light beers were only $2. It was fun. I can't tell you who won, but I didn't taste any bad chili. One observation, most Texas chili has no beans.
The whole time there is live music on the stage, which is amazingly equipped; the quality of the sound is professional.
Many bring chairs, including us, and just find a place in the shade to park yourself. We were stage left in a nice shady spot just the right distance from the music.
The grounds are quite large with lots of interesting things. There are license plates from all over, nailed to buildings, posts, fences, etc. Of course we had to find Vermont.
The entertainers were all good, however one in particular stood out, keep your eye out in the future for a young guy named Mason Lively, he was very good.
Around 5:30PM we picked up our chairs and headed back for San Marcos. We decided to stop for dinner at a place not too far from San Marcos. We found ourselves at Milagro's Hill Country Tex Mex, We were able to get a couple of tables together that could accommodate our entire tribe and we had a great meal.
It was a long but very nice day, we said our goodbyes and headed home. Randy and Sue have many very nice friends and we appreciated spending the day with them.
Sunday will be more or less a day of rest, I think.

It was a picture perfect day. I have never seen so much chili! Sitting around the fire right before bed is so relaxing; can’t wait to start doing it at home. A fun packed and relaxing day!
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's good they didn't have beans after eating so much....
