We got up around 05:30AM and Shannon handed me a coffee and I downed it to get on the road to beat the traffic. We said our goodbyes to our great hosts, Shannon and Rick, and departed almost on plan, a bit after 6AM.
The plan sort of worked, using directions from 3 different GPS programs, we skirted most of the traffic. We did get pushed a bit farther west than planned avoiding jams but overall we only got into a few slow downs. One of the GPS programs I am using is called Copilot. It is what many of the truckers use because it considers the size of your vehicle in routing. Google Maps and others don't have this option and always try to put me on Parkways around NY and NJ, which are only for cars, not RVs. CoPilot is not a great program, but at least it doesn't route me onto routes that cause immediate coronary events.
Once past Philly we went straight to the coast, and took US RT 1 down the coast of Delaware and into Maryland. I have never seen so much mini-golf in my life, how much mini golf can you play!! Frankly, there was not much to see, it was pretty empty but you can see that come summer that stretch of road is very crowed.
Overall, it was not a bad drive and we arrived at Assateaque Island around 3PM. We stopped at the State Park, it was closed but found the National Seashore campground open. We got in free because we are old and camping was only $15 because we are old (Senior National Park Pass).
Driving into the park, we immediately saw a few horses right after we crossed the bridge onto the island.
This time of year there are not many people in the park and you can drive through and pick your site. All the sites are pretty nice, we picked one that backs up to the dunes with the ocean on the other side.
After getting parked, June and I walked the beach, it is some of the finest sand I have ever seen. The beach goes on to infinity! We walked until my feet hurt and finally came upon another couple, I jokingly said where are the horses...well they told us where they saw them...that meant more walking.
So we walked to "Life of Forest Trail" thinking that the horses were long gone, they were still there.
We have all seen horses, but seeing them on an island, running free, that is different. As a bonus, we spotted a few deer, they pretty much just looked at us like just go away.
After June walked my feet raw, we finally went back to camp. Then she wanted to go see the sunset, which would be on the bay side of the island, I said we are driving. It is only a short distance to the other side of the island, and of course there were more horses.
It was a nice sunset, but I think Lake Champlain's are just as nice.
I got a kick out of all the wannabe photographers at the sunset asking each other what they had their cameras set to. Since I know nothing, I could not appreciate the exchange and found it funny. I am sure they got much better pictures than my phone.. :-).
Assateague Island was on June's bucket list, it is worth the visit.
After the sunset we retired to the Serenity Falcon and had a good dinner. We hope to depart tomorrow around 7AM, and head for Kitty Hawk, NC (Fred's bucket list) and then onto our friend Chris's house in Oriental, NC. It will be our longest leg yet, about 7 hours, hugging the coast as close as we can.
Sometimes age has its benefits!!
ReplyDeleteHappy trails to you....
It was a good decision to stop here. We didn’t see that many horses but it was still interesting, tranquil. Long day tomorrow, soooo….early to bed, early to rise.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy that drive down Maryland and Delaware. And assateague is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteDid you enjoy the drive across the bridge?
See you soon!
